Security & Safety Service Departments and University Administration in Public Universities in Nigeria
Abstract
The article discussed the activities of security & safety service departments and university administration in a public university in Nigeria. Secondary data was used to support the points raised in the article. The secondary data were collected from print material and online publications. The paper identified funding challenges, shortage of modern security gadgets, poor capacity building, shortage of security officers, poor motivation, inadequate working materials, shortage of infrastructural facilities and corruption as barriers to effective performance of Security & Safety Service departments of public universities in Nigeria. To address these challenges, the paper advanced the following suggestions; government should increase the funding of public universities and university administrators should increase the budgetary allocation to the Security & safety service departments. This will help the departments to carry out their functions effectively. The university administrators should provide adequate working materials for the department of Security & Safety services to enable them to carry out their services. Also, the national universities commission should come up with compulsory Close Circuit Television (CCTV) policy for all universities to install in all strategic places in the institutions such as students' hostels and classrooms.
