Social Constructionism as an Attack on Substance: Intimations from Aristotle

This paper examines the prevailing evolution of social constructionism attack on substance in today’s world, with a metaphysical response from Aristotle’s notion of substance. The rise of social constructionism in contemporary philosophical discourse presents a challenge to classical metaphysical perspectives with its contingency of categories such as identity, knowledge and reality which turns to erode the notion of inherent essences and stable ontological structures. By this perspective, reality is perceived and shaped by social interactions. As far as Aristotle is concerned, Ousia (substance) is the fundamental reality that exists independently of all existence. It is used to understand the nature of reality, identity and existence. We examine through the lense of Aristotle, homosexuality, transgender and artificial being propounded by the social constructionists. As such, the objective of this paper is to reject the propaganda of social constructionism and to offer an alternative view to social constructionism, preserving a realist metaphysical response of substance while acknowledging the social dimension of human existence.
