Semantic-Functional Classification of Non-Standard English Such as Slang

Slang, as a non-standard variety of language, plays a significant role in informal communication, reflecting cultural, social, and psychological dynamics. This paper aims to explore the semantic-functional classification of slang within the English language, identifying how these forms serve various communicative purposes. Through a qualitative analysis of contemporary examples and scholarly perspectives, the study categorizes slang based on its semantic content and pragmatic function. The findings suggest that slang fulfills a range of roles, from identity expression and social bonding to taboo-breaking and humor.
